The Aprilia RS660 (any model, including the track-spec Trofeo bikes) is equipped with a stock oil/water heat exchanger, designed to:

  • Rapidly warm up the oil at startup using heat from the coolant
  • Cool the oil at operating temperature by transferring excess heat to the coolant.

While effective for street riding, this system struggles during trackdays, high-performance racing conditions and racing events.

In track and road racing use, the heat management is a critical issue:

  • Coolant temperatures rise beyond the radiator’s dissipation capacity.
  • Oil overheats quickly as the coolant cannot absorb enough excess heat.
  • When coolant reaches 100°C, the ECU limits engine performance, reducing ignition timing advance. If your dash displays four dots, power output is reduced.
  • Oil temperatures can exceed 150°C, causing a loss of cooling efficiency for critical engine components. Expecially the pistons, which rely on oil jets for cooling.

  • HOT/COLD connections are positioned on the left side of the radiator, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of aftermarket exhaust systems.
  • Thoughtfully designed hose layout reduces service time—no need to remove the oil radiator during routine track maintenance or repairs, as the hoses provide enough flexibility to allow radiator movement without disconnecting the lines.

The kit is supplied standard with a coolant thermostat bypass kit: it maximize the coolant flow to the radiator but it may need radiator manual taping adjustment. Optional 82°C coolant thermostat available (stock is 89°C), providing stable coolant temperatures without the need for radiator taping.

Installation considerations for sportbike racing and road racing

  • Depending on the track bodywork used, you may need to enlarge the chin opening to accommodate and give enough air flow to the oil cooler.
  • Ensure proper hose clearance inside the belly pan—some adjustments or protective rubber sleeves may be needed to prevent rubbing.
